”Burgess has recycled his lovable lavatorial poet (killed off in ’A Clockwork Testament’), and Enderby undead finds himself employed by a theatre company in Indiana as librettist on a musical about the life of Shakespeare. The director is famous for his nude ’Macbeth’, the composer has his eye on the charts, the male lead is a Hollywood queen, but the dark lady is a beauteous black cabaret artiste for whom Will himself would have betrayed the muse. It’s a mode Burgess is always at home in – travesty, the rough music you can make by clashing the symbols and beating the bastardisers at their own game. ’Enderby’s Dark Lady’ is at once sublime and pathetic, compulsive and absurd.”
