Although Finnish cinema has not produced a director of the stature of Bergman, some names like Donner, Jarva, Mollberg and recently Kaurismäki brothers have succeeded in reaching an audience and a fame beyond Finland. Peter Cowie’s study, which is an enlarged and revised version of his book from 1976, traces and maps the history, tendencies, great themes and major directors of Finnish cinema from the twenties to the threshold of the nineties, from the pastoral tradition to the modern and postmodern preoccupations and even postmodern phenomena. Peter Cowie has written on cinema from the early 1960’s. He has been lecturing on three continents and contributing to newspapers and magazines around the world.”
