”This study by Anssi Halmesvirta, who has presented a doctoral thesis at the University of Sussex, discusses the conceptions held in a centre of culture regarding a peripheral area – the changing British image of Finland from the end of Enlightenment till the Edwardian period. Ill-reputed racial doctrines in science and politics laid a foundation for British defence of Finnish autonomy. The terms used to describe Finland and the Finns are placed by Halmesvirta in the contexts of cultural and political discussion prevailing in the above period, which makes these unfamiliar attitudes and theories more intelligible to us.”
