Set in Germany at the time of the Lutheran reformation, it describes the struggle of a notoriously cruel young general who accepts a challenge to do ’nothing but good’. Its exploration of good and evil through the suffering of one man puts this drama on the level of Sophocles’ ’Antigone’.”
