”Midnight and Noonday is a firsthand account of Caldwell, Kansas, during its riotous days as cattle terminal on the Chisholm Trail. Freeman was an eyewitness to many of the violent deeds of the days ”when Hell was in session in Caldwell.” First published in 1890, the book has long been out of print and generally unavailable. In this new edition it is again made available for historians and readers of western lore. In these pages we read about the murder of Pat Hennessey, the hanging of Tom Smith at Ryland’s Ford, the infamous Talbert raid on Caldwell, the death-dealing career of Billy the Kid, and the Medicine Lodge bank robbery by Billy’s former confederate Henry Brown and Ben Wheeler. In a masterful work of editing, Richard L. Lane sifted through primary materials, icluding official records and contemporary newspapers, verifying facts, clarifying obscure details, and correcting minor errors. His conclusion is that Freeman’s tale is generally accurate, and the best example of cowtown history-memoir that we have. Readers will also agree that it is an authentic celebration of the wild West.”
