”An allusion is a figure of speech that compares aspects of people, places, things and ideas with their familiar counterparts in history, mythology, scripture, and literature. In The Wordsworth Dictionary of Classical & Literary Allusion the 1300 entries are arranged alphabetically and carefully cross-referenced for ease of use and to lead the reader to related terms. The original meaning of each allusion is clearly defined as are the historical sources. In some cases an example of the correct use of the allusion is given to ensure clarity.”
