”This book examines the reasoning involved in the debate between traditional Christian theism and its secular critics. It argues that theism can neither be proved nor shown to be logically incoherent; and that, therefore, the case for theism, as for any secular alternative to it, has to be a cumulative one which relies on a set of converging arguments that cannot be entirely formalised. It is among the book’s main contention that this pattern of argument is not confined to disputes about religion. The concept of a cumulative case is illustrated in the first instance by examples drawn from critical exegesis and history, in which evidence is limited and the area of disagreement comparatively restricted; but it is claimed that a similar pattern is discernible in large-scale disputes involving profound conceptual differences, as in natural science, political theory and metaphysics. The objection that there can be no rational choice between rival ’paradigms’ is considered and rejected. The author believes that, although there are features peculiar to the case of religion, their extent and importance have been exaggerated. The book concludes with a discussion of the rationality of commitment to political or religious systems which must remain controversial. Here again the problem is not peculiar to religious belief, although there is a sense of ’faith’ in which ’faith in God’ has no secular equivalent.”
